Let me tell you about the first five minutes of almost every session in my Chicago studio.

You walk in, hug your arms across your chest, and say some version of “I’m so awkward, I have no idea what I’m doing.” Then my glam artist hands you a mimosa, the music goes on, and forty five minutes later you’re in the makeup chair telling us about your ex. By the time the camera comes out you’ve forgotten you were nervous. By the end you’re dancing in a robe between sets asking if we can do “one more look.”

That, in a nutshell, is empowerment photography. Not a pose. Not a filter. A whole day built around you finally seeing what the rest of us see.

This is the part where most articles get very serious and very boring. I’ll keep it real instead: what happens in a session, how to prep, what the actual research says (yes, there is some), and how to spot a photographer who gets it versus one who’s going to Photoshop you into a stranger.

TL;DR:

  • Empowerment photography celebrates the body you have today. Nothing gets “fixed,” because nothing is broken.
  • A real session includes a planning consult, professional hair and makeup, wardrobe help, and hands on posing. You do not need to know what you’re doing. That’s my job.
  • There’s actual research showing these sessions boost self image, mood, and connection, especially when the images are co-created and shared.
  • Vet a photographer by their range and their retouching philosophy. If every client looks like the same person, run.
  • Pricing depends on styling, time, and what you take home. Ask the questions in the consult, not after.

What Makes Empowerment Photography Different

Regular portraits want you to look “nice.” Glamour photography wants you to look like a magazine. Empowerment photography wants you to look like you, on the day you finally stopped apologizing for taking up space.

The difference is who’s in charge. In my studio you’re the co-author, not the subject. We decide together what mood we’re chasing, which parts of you we’re celebrating loudly, and what story these photos are telling. I’m not here to hide anything. I’m here to light it like it deserves.

Every studio has its own flavor. Some go soft and airy. I go moody, crimson, a little dangerous. But the bones of a real empowerment session look the same everywhere:

  • A planning conversation before shoot day where we talk goals, fears, and the feeling you want
  • Wardrobe chosen by mood, not by what’s trending on Pinterest this week
  • Hair and makeup as part of the experience, not a sneaky upsell
  • Posing and lighting built around the exact body standing in the room, not a template

The women who get the most out of this are the ones who’ve been through something. Postpartum. Divorce. A milestone birthday. A long stretch of feeling invisible. Photographers who do this work call it reclaiming your narrative, and honestly, the mental health boost is real.

What Actually Happens During a Session

Here’s the day, start to finish, no mystery. (Want the long version with photos? I wrote a whole behind the scenes post on it.)

  1. The consult. Before anything, we talk. What do you want to feel when you see these? What are you nervous about? Bring a little moodboard if you have one. Bring nothing if you don’t. I’ve got you.
  2. Glam. My hair and makeup artist spends about an hour with you. This is where the nerves melt, the gossip starts, and you start to feel it.
  3. Wardrobe and set walkthrough. We try on the looks, I show you the sets, and you see how the light works before the camera is even in my hands.
  4. The shoot. I direct everything. Chin here, hand there, shift your weight, drop your shoulder, now laugh at me. You never have to guess. “Just be yourself” is not direction, it’s a cop out, and you won’t hear it from me.
  5. The reveal. You come back to see your images on a big screen and pick your favorites. Retouching handles a stray hair or a blemish. It does not reshape your body. Ever.

Pro Tip: Ask any photographer straight up how they retouch before you book. If they talk about “celebrating realness,” good. If they talk about “fixing problem areas,” you just learned everything you need to know.

Inclusive studios also sweat the details: wardrobe that fits real bodies and not just sample sizes, asking how you want to be addressed instead of assuming, and building in breaks if the day gets emotional. If any of that feels like an afterthought during your consult, believe what you’re seeing.

How to Prep Without Losing Your Mind

Prep is not about achieving a look. It’s about walking in relaxed instead of spiraling in the parking lot.

Wardrobe: Bring pieces that match the mood you want, not what you think is “right” for the camera. Deep jewel tones read as power. Soft neutrals read as tenderness. Bring more than you think you need so we have room to play. Stuck? Start with my what to wear guide.

Moodboard: Five to ten images that capture a feeling, not exact poses to copy. Keep it small and specific. A scattered Pinterest dump helps nobody, least of all you.

Logistics: Sleep. Moisturize two days out, not the morning of (hello, shine). Pack anything that makes you feel like you: your favorite robe, that one necklace, the playlist you scream in the car.

Mindset: This is self care, not a performance review of your body.

  • Skip the “diet before the shoot” trap entirely. You are the point. A smaller version of you is not the point.
  • If nerves show up, five minutes of slow breathing before glam works wonders.
  • Tell me what you’re anxious about. I will build the day around it.

Pro Tip: Nervous about a specific body part? Say it out loud in the consult instead of trying to hide it during the shoot. I can light and pose around anything once I know it exists. I cannot read your mind, and I’ve tried.

The Research (Yes, There’s Research)

I’m not just being a hype girl here. A study of breast cancer patients who did empowerment photography sessions found that co-creating their portraits and then sharing them in a gallery exhibition led to a better self image, more positive emotion, stronger connection to others, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Participants described co-creating their portraits, and later sharing them, as a turning point that changed how they saw their own bodies and connected them to a community of people who got it.

That sharing piece is bigger than it sounds. Seeing your images alongside other women’s seems to amplify the effect well beyond the session itself. It’s why my clients who post their photos, or bring their girlfriends to the reveal, glow a little harder.

One honest note: every woman responds differently. Sometimes a session brings up grief or old stuff you didn’t expect. That’s not a sign anything went wrong. It’s a sign the work is working. If something lingers, talking to a therapist afterward is a smart next step, not a failure.

How to Spot a Photographer Who Gets It

A strong empowerment portfolio shows range. Different bodies, different ages, different vibes, and you can feel a story behind each one. Look for behind the scenes moments and captions that hint at who the client is, not just polished finals.

Red flags: heavy retouching that reshapes bodies, the same three poses on repeat, and zero client testimonials. If every woman in the gallery looks like the same woman, that photographer is shooting a template, not a person.

Bring these to any consult:

  1. How do you retouch, and what stays untouched?
  2. What does the timeline look like from consult to final gallery?
  3. Is hair, makeup, and wardrobe help included, or separate?
  4. How do you handle different body sizes and comfort levels?

What It Costs and How Booking Works

Most studios bundle session time, hair and makeup, and a set number of finished images, with prints, albums, and wall art as add ons. More styling, more time, and more product move the number up from there.

Think of the session fee as your entry ticket and the final investment as what you choose to take home. Before you commit:

  • Book a consult and talk goals and budget out loud
  • Ask to see a full gallery, not just the highlight reel
  • Ask specifically how they handle sizing and styling for your body

Different Seasons, Different Sessions

Empowerment photography isn’t one look. It bends to whatever chapter you’re in.

Maternity sessions celebrate a body mid transformation, usually in the third trimester, with softer light and flowing wardrobe that shows the shape instead of hiding it.

Strength sessions lean into muscle and power: harder light, structured poses, fitted pieces or athletic wear that show the work you put in.

Milestone sessions mark a birthday, a divorce, a diagnosis you beat, a new chapter. These are less about a look and more about a visual receipt that says “I made it to the other side.”

Boudoir, my home turf, is where all of it collides. Lingerie, silk, attitude, and a whole lot of laughing between sets.

A good photographer adjusts styling, pacing, and posing to your chapter instead of running everyone through the same script.

The Fears Everyone Brings (And What I Do About Them)

Almost every woman walks in with the same worry in a different outfit: “What if I don’t look good?”

Totally normal. I expect it. Here’s how it plays out in real life:

  • “I don’t know how to pose.” You’re not supposed to. I direct every single frame. Your only job is to show up and trust me.
  • “I hate my arms / stomach / thighs.” Tell me in the consult. Lighting angle and camera position are decided before you ever step on set. This is literally what I do.
  • “You’re going to judge me.” Babe. I have photographed every body there is. I am not here to critique. I am here to hype.
  • “I’m scared to see the photos.” This is the big one. And the thing that actually happens at almost every reveal is a woman going quiet, then saying “wait, that’s me?” and then crying a little, and then ordering the wall art.

Why This Matters More Than the Photos

You book this thinking you’re getting pretty pictures. What you actually get is proof you can trust your own reflection again.

The industry’s obsession with “flattering angles” misses the point. The real work happens in the consult, when you name the body part you’ve hated since middle school and watch me and my glam artist treat it like nothing to hide. Confidence isn’t a lighting trick. It comes from being seen by someone who doesn’t flinch.

That’s the piece regular portrait photography skips, and it’s the piece worth paying attention to when you decide who photographs you next.

Come Play in My Studio

At Bri Valiente Boudoir, every session starts with a consult, includes professional hair and makeup, and gets a set built around your mood, not a package pulled off a shelf. Sizing, comfort, pacing, and every awkward question get answered in that consult, so by the time you walk into my Chicago studio, the only surprise left is how much fun you’re about to have.
