You have been stalking boudoir accounts for weeks. You have a folder of saved posts, three tabs open, and a group chat that keeps asking “so did you book yet?”
Here is the thing nobody tells you: the photographer you pick matters more than the lingerie, the set, or how many squats you did before your session. The right one makes you feel like the main character. The wrong one leaves you with a gallery you hide in a folder.
I have been a photographer for 17 years, and I have spent a lot of those years hearing stories from women who booked the wrong person first. So let me hand you the checklist I would give my own best friend.
TL;DR:
- Look for a portfolio full of real bodies that looks consistent from gallery to gallery, not five lucky shots.
- Read real reviews and pay attention to how clients say they felt, not just how the photos look.
- Ask if pro hair and makeup is included, if there is a client closet, and if they pose you the whole time.
- Ask how your images are delivered and who gets to see them.
- A good photographer explains pricing clearly and offers a real consult call before you pay anything.

1. Study the Portfolio Like You Are the Client in It
Everyone posts their best image. What you want to know is whether every client gets that level of work.
Scroll deep. Look for:
- Consistency. Do the galleries look like the same artist made them, or does quality swing wildly from shoot to shoot?
- Real bodies. Different sizes, ages, skin tones, and shapes. If every single client looks like a fitness model, ask yourself if that photographer knows how to pose you.
- Faces that look relaxed. Stiff shoulders and fake smiles mean nobody was directing. Soft, confident expressions mean somebody made that woman feel safe.
- A style you actually love. Light and airy, dark and moody, editorial, playful. Pick the vibe that makes you say “that is me,” not the one that is trending this month.

2. Read the Reviews for Feelings, Not Just Photos
Pretty pictures are the bare minimum. What you really want to know is how the day felt.
Read the Google reviews and look for words like comfortable, safe, laughed, nervous at first, did not want it to end. Those are the reviews that tell you the photographer knows how to handle a woman who walked in terrified and walked out on a self love high.
And please, read the ones that mention the reveal. That is where you find out if clients felt supported when choosing their images or pressured and rushed.

3. Ask If Hair and Makeup Is Included
This one is huge and it is where a lot of “cheap” shoots cut corners.
Studio lighting and print are a whole different world from your everyday makeup. A pro artist who does boudoir glam every week knows how to make your skin look incredible under those lights and on a printed page.
At my studio, professional hair and makeup is part of every full experience. Our glam team, Ty and Mariam, have years of experience between them getting women to that “damn, I’m hot” moment before they ever step on set. You can meet them on our Team page.

4. Find Out What You Need to Bring (Hint: It Should Not Be Much)
Some photographers expect you to show up with a suitcase full of outfits you bought just for this. Others have you covered.
Ask if there is a client closet. Ours has over 400 pieces in sizes XXS to 6X, so you can literally show up in sweats and we will style you. If you still want to bring a few favorites, my what to wear guide will help you pack.
5. Ask How Much They Direct You
If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: you should never have to know how to pose.
Ask a potential photographer, “Will you pose me the whole time?” The answer you want is an enthusiastic yes. I direct every angle, down to your fingertips, your chin, and where your weight sits. That is literally the job. My clients do not freeze up because they are never left wondering what to do next.
Curvy babe wondering how that looks in real life? Here are 20 plus size boudoir poses that actually work.

6. Ask How Your Images Are Delivered and Who Sees Them
These are some of the most personal photos you will ever take. You deserve a clear answer about where they live.
Ask:
- How are my images delivered?
- Is my gallery private?
- Will you ever share my images, and do you ask first?
At my studio, your images are delivered in your own private Pixieset gallery and app, not a random download link floating around your inbox. And we never post your photos without your written permission. Period.
7. Make Sure Pricing Is Explained Like You Are an Adult
Boudoir pricing can feel like a mystery, and it should not. A good photographer will explain the difference between your session and your collection (the images and products you take home), what is included, and what is extra.
I wrote a whole post on this: how much a boudoir photoshoot costs in Chicago. The short version is that mini sessions at my studio start at $250, and full experiences are walked through on a free phone consult so the numbers fit what you actually want.
Also ask about payment options. We offer in house payment plans with 0% interest and no credit checks, plus Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, and PayPal Pay in 4. Everything is laid out on our Book Now, Pay Later page.

8. Look at the Studio, Not Just the Photos
Where you shoot changes everything. A spare bedroom with one lamp is not the same as a real studio with sets and lighting built to flatter real bodies.
Our Chicago studio on Harlem Ave has a moody bedroom set, a showgirl set inspired by vintage burlesque dressing rooms, and access to some of the best production spaces in the city if you want a totally different vibe. Take a peek at what it is really like behind the scenes.
9. Book the Consult Call and Trust Your Gut
The consult call is your chance to interview them. Notice how you feel on the phone.
- Did they answer every question without getting weird about it?
- Did they ask about you, why you want this, and what matters most to you?
- Did you hang up excited, or did you hang up feeling sold to?
If your gut says yes, listen. If your gut says “eh,” keep looking. This is your experience and you deserve to feel great about who is behind the camera.
